Pacuare Lodge Family Escape

This unforgettable adventure lets you and your family explore Costa Rica’s most diverse and exuberant tropical nature. Experience the Pacuare River, one of the top 10 scenic rivers in the world, glide between treetop platforms on cables or visit an isolated Cabecar indigenous home deep in the forest and create long-lasting memories.

Day 1:
6:00 -7:00 am: Your family adventure begins early, when we pick you up at one of our scheduled locations for the 2.5 hours’ drive into the mountains east of San José, past small coffee farming towns, exuberant tropical forests and amazing views. We’ll stop for a traditional Costa Rican breakfast, then head to the Pacuare River. After an orientation by your river guide, you’ll begin a 1½ hour river-rafting trip (class II-III rapids) past impressive tropical landscapes to the Pacuare Lodge, Costa Rica’s premier eco-lodge, which will be your home for the next three nights. This section of the river is ideal for white-water novices and families, who will enjoy its exciting rapids.

You’ll arrive at the lodge around 12:00 noon – 1:00 pm, in time for a delicious lunch. Following you join your naturalist guide for a 1 hour hike through the lodge’s protected forest to an idyllic waterfall where you and your children may swim in a natural pool surrounded by tropical vegetation. Return to the lodge, relax and enjoy an exquisite candlelight dinner. (B, L, D)

Day 2:
You’ll awake to birdsong and the soothing sound of the river. Head over to Nairi Awari restaurant for a hearty breakfast. Following you will experience the Pacuare Lodge Canopy Adventure. There, you’ll enjoy a bird’s eye view of the rainforest canopy – an elevated ecosystem of bromeliads, orchids and other flowering plants growing on the branches of massive tropical trees while sliding along cables from tree to tree as you descend the jungle cloaked mountain toward the Pacuare Lodge. Your trip ends at The Nest, a platform 20 meters (60 feet) high in a treetop, where your family will enjoy a delicious lunch in a uniquely splendid setting high in the branches of a Ceiba: a tree that is sacred to the ancient Mayan.

The afternoon is open for a visit to our Jawa Juu Spa or simply relax in your private suite.

Day 3:
Today your outdoor adventures include the option of a visit to a typical Cabecar Rancho or hike to Bajos del Tigre village. Since time immemorial, the Cabécar Indians – Costa Rica’s largest tribe – have lived in harmony with the rainforest in the mountains near the Pacuare River .We helped members of a clan that lives in the nearby Nairi Awari Indigenous Reserve to build a typical Cabécar Rancho (thatched house) a short hike from the lodge, where the son of a local shaman provides visitors with an introduction to his people’s culture and customs. Breakfast will be served at the Rancho, where your family will have the opportunity to experience this ancient culture and have fun doing traditional crafts with one of the Cabecar members.

The second option is a 1.5 hour hike to Bajos del Tigre village located on the far bank of the river were most of our employees come from. Guided by a naturalist guide, explore the river region and rain forest, and visit the community of Bajo del Tigre, a small hamlet of farmers dedicated to the harvesting of species, roots, and tubercles, among others. You`ll visit the home of a local family and try a typical Costa Rican snack, such as “picadillo”, while seeing how they live. Your children will have the opportunity to visit the community`s one-room schoolhouse (during weekdays) where one energetic teacher teaches all grades. Following you head back on a trail that winds its way down to the Pacuare Lodge.

Afternoon free to relax.

Surprise your family with a magical dinner by the riverbank. We’ll set up an elegant, private table for you near the river’s edge, lit by a fire pit and candles and surrounded by nature. You can savor an exquisite meal under the stars, with a small fire crackling nearby and the soothing sounds of flowing water and tree frog chirps. (B, L, D)

Day 4:
After a hearty breakfast, you’re off for more natural adventure. You’ll depart between 9:00-10:00 am by raft for a day of white water rafting that is more exhilarating than the first day (approximately 3½ hours over class III-IV rapids). This option is available only for children 12 years and up. Children ages 7 to 11 will leave the lodge with the parents via four by four vehicle.

This stretch of the Pacuare River flows through canyons and past waterfalls and virgin rainforest. You’re likely to catch glimpses of varied birds and other wildlife during the quiet stretches. A deli-style lunch will be served on the riverbank en route, and you’ll have a chance to change into dry clothes at our private facilities by the river take-out before the drive back to your hotel in our minibus. You can expect to arrive back in San Jose between 6-6:30 pm. (B, picnic lunch, D).
